Arthur D. (Tom) Akins

Mr. Arthur D. (Tom) Akins, age 85, of Fairview Road Rockmart passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2011 following a two year illness.


He was born in Bartow County, GA on May 14, 1926 a son of the late Clarence Hill Akins and Fannie Boswell Akins. Mr. Akins had lived the greater part of his life in Polk County and was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II. Mr. Akins was a retired employee of the Georgia Department of Transportation. Following his retirement he worked for a number of years at E & L Feed Store in Rockmart. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mrs. Lois Haney in November of 2006.


Survivors include his wife, Minnie Lee Godfrey Akins of Rockmart to whom he was married on February 15, 1945; five children: Nancy Holliday, Brenda Akins, Billy Akins, Tommy Akins all of Rockmart and Howard Powell, Aragon; four grandchildren: Jessica Watkins, Bessie Hudson, Krissy Gibbs and Nick Gibbs; one great granddaughter, Braylee Watkins and five nieces and nephews also survive.


Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Hoyt Lewis and Minister Alvis Miller officiating. Interment will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery.


Pallbearers will include: Mike Haney, Larry Haney, Nick Gibbs, Edward Akins, John Forsyth and Gary Simmons. Honorary pallbearers will include: Bobby Haney, Jimmy Harper, Garland Haney and Don Agan.


The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.


The Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for the funeral of Mr. Arthur D. (Tom) Akins.
