Arthur H. Godwin

Mr. Arthur H.(Art) Godwin, age 85, of 701 Oakcrest Dr., Rockmart passed away Sunday, June 29,2008 following several months of declining health.

He was born in Bolton, GA on May 29, 1923 a son of the late Wesley Andrew Godwin, Sr. and Marena Sorrells Godwiwn. Mr. Godwin returned to Rockmart from the Cave Spring area in 1992 following his retirement from Plant Hammond of the Georgia Power Company. Prior to his work with Georgia Power he owned and operated a funeral home in Bowden Georgia and later worked for the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in Marietta from which he retired.

Mr. Godwin was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II where he saw action during the invasion of Normandy. While in the Army he served in the Medical Corp and attained the rank of Master Sergeant.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Rockmart and was a member of Bowden Lodge # 206 F. & A.M. Mr. Godwin was also a former member of the Rockmart Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Whiteside Godwin of Rockmart to whom he was married on September 25, 1943; one daughter, Mrs. Wanda Godwin Oldfield and her husband Harden of Augusta, GA; three brothers:
Lt. Col retired John Godwin, Clayton, NC, Mr. Charles Godwin, Anniston, AL and Dr. Bill Godwin, Smyrna, GA.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Rockmart with Rev. Al Cunningham and Rev. Burch Fannin officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery with the Northwest Georgia Memorial Club in charge of Masonic Graveside Rites.

Pallbearers will include: J. W. LeGrande, Jerry Whiteside, Butch Jacobs, Bob Whiteside, Bill Cantrell, Colonel Lee Whiteside and Gary Simmons.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Rockmart.

The Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
