Dorothy Lee Whiteside (Dot) Godwin

Mrs. Dorothy Lee Whiteside (Dot) Godwin, age 90, of Rockmart passed away peacefully at her residence on Sunday, July 27, 2014.

She was born in Aragon, GA on March 27, 1924 a daughter of the late Eugene Whiteside and Annie Turner Whiteside. Mrs. Godwin and her late husband Art returned to Rockmart in 1992 from Cave Spring, GA . following his retirement. The couple and their daughter had lived in several communities around the state during their working career. Mrs. Godwin was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Rockmart. She was active in the Seniors On The Go program of the First United Methodist Church and was also active with the Golden Age program of the First Baptist Church of Rockmart.

She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty five years, Arthur Helms (Art) Godwin on June 29, 2008; by a brother, Tatum Whiteside and by a sister, Jacqueline Purser.

Survivors include her daughter, Wanda Godwin Oldfield and her husband H.A. (Buddy) of Augusta, GA; two sisters: Golda LeGrande, Rockmart and Norma Jacobs, Rockmart; two brothers: Jerry Whiteside, Athens, GA and Bob Whiteside, Brentwood, TN; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Rockmart with Rev. Jeanette Dickens officiating. A eulogy will be given by Colonel Lee Whiteside. A private interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Godwin will lie instate at the church Wednesday from 10a.m. until the funeral hour.

Pallbearers will include: Bobby Renshaw, Mitchell LeGrande, Lee Whiteside, Tim Birdsong, Randy Purser, Jonathan Purser, Scott Jacobs, Will Whiteside and Walt Whiteside.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. at the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial gifts be made to the First United Methodist Church of Rockmart, Seniors On The Go Shuttle Fund, 135 Church St. Rockmart, GA 30153 or to Heyman Hospice Care, 420 E. Second Ave. Rome, GA 30161.

The Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for the funeral of Mrs. Dorothy Lee Whiteside (Dot) Godwin.
