Elizabeth Jo Hammond Shamblin

January 12, 1934 — October 18, 2019

Elizabeth Jo Hammond Shamblin was born on January 12, 1934, second daughter of James and Edna Hammond, in Trion, Georgia. Jo graduated from Trion High School with the class of 1952 and attended Oglethorpe University. She married her high school sweetheart, Benjamin Jackson Shamblin, in 1957 and accompanied him to the University of Georgia during his collegiate football career. Jack and Jo settled in Rome and welcomed three children during their marriage, Mary Elizabeth, Ben, and John. During their time in Rome and Chattooga County, Jo was the school secretary for Coosa Middle School. Jo and Jack later moved to the quiet community of Bent Tree in Jasper and welcomed three grandchildren, Keely, Jillian, and Jackson. Jo was affectionately known as “Nana” to all from that point forward and was later overjoyed to welcome three great-grandchildren later in life. On October 18, 2019, Jo surrendered her earthly body and took flight.

Jo is survived by her children Mary Elizabeth “Liz” McCollum, John Shamblin and his wife Mary Shamblin. Grandchildren: Keely Lambert and her husband Marcus Lambert, Jillian Anderson and her husband Will Anderson, and Jackson Shamblin. Great-Grandchildren: Cadence Lambert, Noah Lambert and Blair Anderson. Sisters: Nona Whipple, Lynn Chamblee and Mona Faye Dilbeck. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Shamblin, son Benjamin Jackson Shamblin Jr., father James “Buddy” Hammond, mother Edna Hammond, step-mother Irma Hammond, brother Jimmy Hammond and sister Sandy Campbell.

A Memorial Services will follow a private family burial held on Saturday, October 26th, 2019, at Trion First Baptist Church at 1:00.
