George Scott

Mr. George H. ?Red? Scott, age 93, of 235 Mountain Way Rockmart passed away Sunday, January 27, 2008 at his residence following several months of declining health.


He was born in Rockmart on January 24, 1915 a son of the late Reuben ?Rube? Scott and Fannie Ludessa Gentry Scott. Mr. Scott had lived the greater part of his life in Rockmart, was of the Baptist faith, was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corp and for many years was very involved in community and civic activities. He served as Mayor of Rockmart from 1974 to 1983; was a former member of the Rotary Club serving as President in 1980-1981; served as President of the Rockmart Chamber of Commerce and served on the Board of Directors of the Coosa Valley Development Authority. In 2006 he served as a Grand Marshall of the Homespun Parade.


Mr. Scott was employed by the Rockmart Bank for 28 years serving in all aspects of the banks activities from teller to his retirement as President of the Bank. Following his retirement from banking he owned and operated Rock City Enterprises from 1975 to 1995.


Mr. Scott was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Jimmie Lou Scott on July 4, 1971 and by one sister and two brothers.


Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Clara Head Scott of Rockmart to whom he was married on May 23, 1975; numerous nieces and nephews including two special nieces: Rita A. Martin of Rockmart and Susan West of Taylorsville.


Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 29th. at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. David Taylor and Rev. Greg Thompson officiating. Interment followed in Rose Hill Cemetery with Minister Alvis Miller conducting graveside rites.


Pallbearers included: Bob Culver, Bryan Culver, Chris Culver, Lucas Culver, Dr. Charles M. Smith, III and Danny West.


The Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
