Herbert Preston (Red) Horton

Mr. Herbert Preston (Red) Horton, age 78, of 2416 Vinson Mountain Road, Rockmart passed away Sunday, September 7, 2008 following a brief illness.


He was born in Sylacauga, AL on November 26, 1929 a son of the late William Thomas Horton and Queenie Elizabeth Smith Horton. Mr. Horton had been a resident of Polk County since 1957. He was a member of the Yorkville Methodist Church , retired in 1980 from Bankhead Industries where he had been employed as a machinist, was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was an avid fisherman. Mr. Horton was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Betty Joyce Stegall on June 20, 2003 and by a brother, Mr. Paul Horton.


Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mae Horton of Rockmart to whom he was married in November of 1951; two daughters: Mrs. Shelia Smith, Rockmart and Ms Denise Horton of Silver Creek; two brothers: Mr. Leak Horton and Mr. Frank Horton both of Sylacauga, AL; six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren also survive.


Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Barry Snapp officiating. Interment will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery with Brown-Wright Post # 12 of the American Legion in charge of military graveside rites.


Pallbearers will include: Mike Smith, Jimmy Stegall, Barry Cole, Dusty Cole, Adam Smith and Scotty Stegall. Honorary pallbearers will include: Shelly Stegall, Amy Earwood and Jodie Swift.


The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.


The Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
