James Lee Griggs

August 19, 1926 — January 5, 2024

Mr. James Lee Griggs, age 97, of Rockmart, GA passed away Friday, January 5, 2024 in a Rome medical center.


Mr. Griggs was born in Cartersville, GA on August 19, 1926 a son of Hubert J. Griggs and Clara Meeks Griggs. He was a member of the Bethel Crossroads Baptist Church and was a proud veteran of the United States Army joining in December of 1944 and served in World War II. After returning home from service he married the love of his life, Inez Hulsey Griggs and have been celebrating life together for the past 76 years. James was a mechanic and had worked for the John Rogers Company, Clark equipment Company and retired as a master mechanic with the Georgia Power Company. He enjoyed farming, had owned and operated a gas station and was a licensed auctioneer. He was a member of John W. Akin Masonic Lodge # 537 F. & A.M. and the Brown-Wright Post #12 of the American Legion


Mr. Griggs loved tinkering with old tractors, fishing, attending homecoming singings at church, working in his garden, shelling pecans and preserving pears from the trees that he planted. He also loved his fur baby Tinkerbell. James was a hard working man who loved to stay busy. He was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and enjoyed watching football and NASCAR Racing. Some of his happiest times, that he looked forward to and enjoyed the most was having his family and friends at the table filled with a feast of food on Thanksgiving and Christmas, this brought him joy and created many special memories for all.


In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his oldest son, James Lamar (Jimmy) Griggs and by a brother, J.D. Griggs.


He is survived by his loving wife, Inez Hulsey Griggs; son, Phil Griggs and his wife, Debbie; daughter in law, Lois Griggs; grandchildren: Chris, Dena, Charles and Christine; great grandchildren: Logan, Bodee, Rachel, Dakota, Christopher and Abigail; great-great grandchildren, Emmie and Sawyer; sister, Sara Brownlow; and numerous nieces and nephews. 


Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 11, 2024 at 3:00 pm in the chapel of the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Dempsey officiating and eulogies given by Mike Brownlow and Sam Ingram. Interment will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors delivered by the Honor Guard of Brown-Wright Post # 12 of the American Legion. Masonic graveside rites will be delivered by the John W. Akin Masonic Lodge # 537 F. & A.M..


Serving as pallbearers will be the following gentlemen: Chris Owens, Bodee Owens, Mike Brownlow, Jason Stroup, Chad Crumley and Larry Patterson, Jr. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be: Kenneth Tillery, Sam Ingram, Larry Patterson, Harry Patterson, Jerry Stringer, JC Thomas, Jamie Elrod, Ben Costlow, Jimmy Hulsey, Rufus Cantrell, Harry Worthington, Clayton Harris, and Alfred Hulsey. 


The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00 pm until the service hour at 3:00 pm at the funeral home.
