Jewell Hawkins Ellington

March 14, 1921 — July 3, 2009

Mrs. Jewell Hawkins Ellington, age 88, of 11194 Big Canoe, GA formerly of Rome passed away Friday, July 3, 2009 in Cumming, GA.


She was born in Chattooga County, GA on March 14, 1921 a daughter of the late James Monroe Hawkins and Rosa Jane Cargle Hawkins. Mrs. Ellington married her childhood sweetheart, Raymond Ellington and supported him throughout his career in the military including three wars: World War II (Prisoner of War), Korean Conflict and Vietnam. After their retirement, they moved back to Rome, GA where she resided until her health required her to move to the Cumming Nursing Center in Cumming, GA. She was a devoted mother, loving and proud grandmother and great grandmother, Faithful Christian and friend to so many. She always put others needs and wants before her own.


Those left behind will miss her but will have beautiful memories and our hearts will be filled with her love and God and Heaven are rejoicing in the arrival of His new angel.


Mrs. Ellington was a member of the Pleasant Valley South Baptist Church , the church choir and had been active in the Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Couples II Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Wilson Ellington on December 23, 1999 and by a son Charles Buddy Freeman in 1980.


Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Sandra Kirkley Lipkowitz and her husband John of Big Canoe, GA; her son, Mr. Raymond W. Ellington, Rockmart, GA; sister, Mrs. Catherine Peppers, Lafayette, GA; eight grandchildren: John Kirkley, Jr., Drew Kirkley, Clay Kirkley, Amy Hughes, Christen Robinson, Sandra Ellington, Sarah Ellington and Joey Ellington; thirteen great grandchildren: Peyton, Oliver, Gabrielle, Jay, Lila, Graham, Holly, Brett, Dana, Austen, Treyden, Anthony Ray and Christina.


Funeral services will be held Monday, July 6, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the Pleasant Valley South Baptist Church with Dr. Phillip May and Rev. Warren Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the Little Sand Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery.


Mrs. Ellington will lie instate at the church Monday from 1:30 p.m. until the funeral hour.


Pallbearers will include: Joey Ellington, John Kirkley, Jr., Drew Kirkley, Clay Kirkley, Anthony Ray Robinson, James Yahres, John Kirkley and Zack Garrett.


The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home.
