Joel A. Chandler

Mr. Joel A. Chandler, age 77, of 2325 Frettiesburg Drive Rockmart, GA passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2010 in a Rome Medical Center following a brief illness.


He was born in Carroll County, GA on May 12, 1932 a son of the late Willie Albert Chandler and Geneva Williams Chandler. Mr. Chandler has been a resident of Rockmart since January of 2000 moving here from the Villa Rica area and had also lived for many years in the Austell area. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Korea. Mr. Chandler was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rockmart and the Adult Three Sunday School Class. He retired as an engineer in 1991 from Southern Bell following 39 years of service to the company. He was also a member of the Old Rascals Breakfast Club that met daily at BoJangles.


Mr. Chandler was preceded in death by two sisters: Marguerette Chandler and Charlcie Inman.


Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Jean Chandler of Rockmart to whom he was married on October 22, 1955; two sons: Mr. Keith Chandler and wife Sharon, Lithia Springs and Mr. Chet Chandler and wife Dana, Marietta; four grandchildren: Katie and Scott Chandler and Mattie Lou and Annie Chandler; two brothers: Mr. Denver Chandler and Rev. Talmadge Chandler both of Carrollton.


Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Rockmart with Rev. Clyde Wade, Rev. Greg Thompson and Rev. Talmadge Chandler officiating. Interment will follow in the Mars Hill Baptist Church Cemetery of Carroll County.


Nephews will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will include members of the Men's Adult Three Sunday School Class and members of the BoJangles Breakfast Club.


The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.


The Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home of Rockmart is in charge of arrangements.
