Curtis B.
Lewis
Jul 14, 1938 — May 7, 2026
Mr. Curtis B. Lewis, age 87, of Rockmart, GA, passed away Thursday evening May 7th, 2026, at his residence.
Curtis was born in Rockmart GA on July 14th, 1938, to the late Clarence William “C.W.” Lewis and the late Vastie Chupp Lewis. He was a man whose life was rooted in faith, family, service, and community. Born and raised on a dairy farm alongside his four siblings, Curtis learned the value of hard work, humility, and caring for others from an early age. He graduated from Rockmart High School in 1956, where he was an active member of both the FFA and the debate team. It was during his high school years that he met the love of his life, Sue. The two married in 1958 and built a beautiful life together centered around faith, family, and service to others.
In 1959, Curtis founded Curtis Lewis Motor Company, a family-owned dealership that faithfully served the community for more than six decades. Through his business, Curtis became known not only for his work ethic and integrity, but for the relationships he built with generations of families throughout the area.
Curtis dedicated much of his life to serving the people of Rockmart. He served as Mayor from 1970–1974, where he was the youngest Mayor ever elected at age 31. He served again from 2000–2011. During his years of leadership, he helped bring the Silver Comet Trail to Rockmart, a lasting contribution that continues to benefit the community today. He was also passionate about supporting Relay for Life and worked faithfully for many years to encourage and strengthen those efforts.
His heart for service extended far beyond city government. Curtis served on the Coosa Valley Regional Development Center, volunteered as a panel reviewer for foster children, and served on the Sarah Hightower Board of Trustees from 2000–2011, including serving as Board Chair from 2007–2009. He was also a devoted Mason for 59 years, valuing the fellowship, principles, and service that organization represented. Curtis was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.
Above all else, Curtis will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, faithful friend, and a man whose kindness and compassion touched countless lives. His legacy of faith, generosity, leadership, and love for his community will continue for generations to come.
In addition to his parents, Curtis was preceded in death by his brothers, Rev. Hoyt G. Lewis, and Freddie Douglas Lewis; and his sister, Addie Robinson.
Curtis is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Sue Lewis, whom he married on July 18th, 1958; his 4 children, Tim Lewis, Pam Gamel (Garlin), Neil Lewis (Crissy), and Chris Lewis (Hayley); 12 grandchildren, Scott Lewis, Brian Lewis, Kayli Brumbelow, Shelbi Williams, Josh Gamel, Cody Gamel, Crysta Klobe, Andrew Lewis, Anna Goodwin, Luke Lewis, Sydney Lynn Lewis, and Raegan Lewis; 20 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and his sister, Barbara Peek.
