Colonel (Retired) Dan Steele, 68, of Bethel Park, PA embraced his Lord and Savior peacefully at his home with family by his side at 8:55am, Saturday, May 30th, 2026 after a courageous and dignified battle with ALS.
Dan was born in Seoul, Korea to Soon Ae (Hong) Nemec and was later adopted by Jackie Steele of Huntsville, Alabama.
Following graduation from Washington High School in Tacoma, WA, Dan began his military service at the United States Air Force Academy with the Class of 1979. After graduation and commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, Dan met the love of his life, Julie, and together they served for more than 28 years. Their career took them around the world, through various operational and staff assignments within Air Mobility Command, Joint Staff, and Headquarters Air Force. Along the way, Dan and Julie were blessed with their three children, five grandchildren, and many close friends. Dan dedicated his career to building teams of mission-focused Airmen and championing Total Force relationships with Guard and Reserve partners. His career highlight was watching Team Travis “Kick the Cann”, solving issues that had plagued the C-5 Galaxy’s fleet readiness for decades. Following his retirement from active duty, Dan and Julie moved to the South Hills of Pittsburgh where he continued to serve others as a realtor.
Dan lived his life with a servant’s heart and never put himself before others. He focused on family and community, dedicating his energy to helping those around him achieve their full potential and goals. He touched many lives and changed them for the better, often without realizing how great an impact he had.
Dan accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized along with his children at First Baptist Church in Springfield, VA. He held firmly to Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart…” and he would always say, “God has a plan”.
Dan is reunited with his mother, Soon, and mother-in-law, Virginia Greeson. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 47 years, Julie (Bailey) Steele; father-in-law, Billy Greeson of Aragon, GA; his daughter, Amber (husband, Greg) Steele of Bethel Park, PA; sons Adam and Alex (wife, Heather) Steele of Peters Township, PA; grandchildren, Caleb, Megan, Micah, Caroline, and Greyson; and sisters, Patty (husband, Fred) Reno, of Spanaway, WA, Penny (husband, Rick) Steele, of Kirkland, WA, Reshel (husband, Frank) Brown, Renee Morrison, Roxanne Shelby, all of Weiser, ID, and sister-in-law, Debbie (husband, Dewayne) Scoggins of Silver Creek, GA.
The family will receive guests from 2-4pm and 6-8pm on Monday, June 15th, at Beinhauer Family Funeral Home in McMurray, PA. A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00pm, Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at the Beinhauer Family Funeral Home, 2828 Washington Road, McMurray, PA. A committal service with military honors will follow at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Bridgeville, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking guests to consider making memorial contributions towards ALS research via the ALS Association at www.ALS.org.
Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home is honored to post this obituary for the family.
