Obituary

Dannie Freeman, known to most as Chief Dan Wolf, dies February 26, 2026, at the age of 93, surrounded by the people he loved.

Born on February 28, 1932, in Lumberton, North Carolina, Chief was the son of the late Minnie Deese Freeman and the late Leoander Freeman. One of nine children, he was a proud full-blooded Cherokee Indian and a devoted member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. He carried deep pride in his Native heritage and shared his culture with countless individuals throughout his life.

Chief lived a full and adventurous life, pursuing his passions across the country. As a young man, he competed in bull riding events nationwide, earning admiration for his courage and skill. Rodeos often opened with the unforgettable sight of Chief riding his massive Brahma bull, E.T., thrilling audiences wherever he went. His beloved Indian pony, Cloud Dancer, was also a crowd favorite.

Using his vast knowledge and love of nature, Chief educated and entertained young and old alike with his snakes and animal performances. Though he made his living as a welder, he was a showman at heart.

Chief occasionally portrayed Chief Knock-A-Homa at Atlanta Braves games, delighting baseball fans with his presence. During the drought of 1986, he was invited to perform a rain dance on the steps of the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta. Chief would later share that while the rain did not fall immediately, it began on his journey home to Locust Grove.

In Atlanta, Chief met the love of his life, Martha Joan Harper. They married and shared 56 wonderful anniversaries before her passing in 2012. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Karen “Katie” Freeman; a son, Shawn Freeman; and seven siblings.

Chief is survived by his daughter, Dana Prather (Wiley); five grandchildren, Adam, Krystal, George, Tyler, and Cooper; his sister, Molly Hunt; along with many great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews who will cherish his memory.

Chief Dan Wolf will be remembered for his courage, his culture, his storytelling spirit, and the unforgettable way he lived life on his own terms.
