Mrs. Faye Scott Matthews, age 89, of Rockmart, GA, passed away Wednesday evening, July 30, 2025.
Mrs. Matthews was born in Taylorsville, Georgia, on June 18, 1936, a daughter of late James Wesley Scott and Bessie Barnette Scott. She spent most of her life in Rockmart and Taylorsville, communities she dearly loved and remained closely connected to.
A devoted member of Rockmart Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Matthews served faithfully as the church secretary until her retirement. She was a loving, kind, and generous soul—sometimes to a fault—and will be remembered for her creativity, energy, and gift for conversation. She never met a stranger and found joy in traveling and connecting with people wherever she went.
Despite a tragic car accident 27 years ago, Mrs. Matthews demonstrated remarkable resilience. She faced chronic pain and debilitating setbacks with unwavering strength and determination, never giving up.
Her family was the center of her world. She especially cherished time spent with her beloved grandson and great-grandchildren, who lovingly called her “Gigi.” Even in her darkest moments, just the mention of them would bring light to her face and warmth to her heart.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, perseverance, and unwavering devotion to those she held dear.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by an infant brother, Franklin Scott, brothers, Joe Scott, Bobby Scott, Ruben Scott, and John Scott, sisters, Martha Brock and Paulette Martin.
Mrs. Matthews is survived by her children, Julie (Jimmy) Payne, Sherry (Steve) Shelley, and Dutch Matthews; grandchildren, Jesse (Jessica) Payne, Dakota Matthews, James (Reenee) Payne, and Michael (Suzanne) Payne; great-grandchildren, Madison Payne, Cohen Payne, James Payne, Dylan (Kaitlyn) Payne, and Brantley Payne; sister, Patty Scott; sisters-in-law, Doris Scott, Marion Scott and Sudie (James) Gordy; brother-in-law, Henry (Debra) Matthews; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In keeping with her wishes, Mrs. Matthews will be cremated, and a memorial service is being planned at a later date.
Mrs. Matthews’ family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of The Cottages in Rockmart for the love and care shown to their Mother.
