Mr. Gary Lamont Paulus, age 78, of Cedartown, GA, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2022.
Gary was born in Salt Lake City, UT, on November 24, 1943, a son of the late Oscar G. Paulus and Crystal A. Paulus. He was a veteran of the United States Army and retired after 21 years of service to his country. Gary received numerous service medals including the National Defense Service award, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Award, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm, Meritorious Service Medal and the Korean Defense Service Medal. He served two tours in Vietnam and received a Certificate of Support from the American Legion Association. Gary was a huge supporter of military and law enforcement and was very patriotic. He was a member and deacon of the Church of God of the Union Assembly of Polk where he was ordained as a deacon in April of 2005. He enjoyed working outdoors, fooling with his lawnmower, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. Gary loved to eat and was an avid sports fan, especially the Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldogs.
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by a son, Eric Paulus, and a sister, Bonnie Hess.
Gary is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Joan Gentry Paulus; children, Michelle Brown, Wendy (Andres) Lopez, Dustin (Ashley) Cole; grandchildren, Gabbie Ramos, Gracie Ramos, Cassie Cole, Kylie Cole, Lily Lopez, Tristin Payne, Jaxon Cole, Andrea Lopez-Cruz, Leslie Lopez, and Andrew Lopez; great-grandchild, Remi Cruz; sisters, Delores Smith, Cheri (Merril) Law; niece, Debbie Vasquez.
Funeral services to honor Gary’s life will be Sunday afternoon, June 26, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel of Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home with Pastor Jesse Starnes and Rev. Houston Eaton officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens in Cartersville, GA with full military honors provided by Fort Benning Honor Guard.
Gary’s family will receive friends Sunday afternoon at Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home from 2:00 p.m. until the funeral hour.
Pallbearers will include Labron Morgan, Keith Lentz, Justin Payne, Aaron Holbrook, Ted Bagley, and Gabe Franklin.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Polk County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit.
