John Curtis "Sonny" Lanier, Jr.

Mr. John Curtis “Sonny” Lanier, Jr., age 76, of Rockmart, GA, passed away Monday, July 22, 2024, at his residence.

Sonny was born in Rockmart on January 10, 1948, a son of the late John Curtis Lanier, Sr., and Agnes Vivadell Ferguson Lanier. He had lived the greater part of his life in Rockmart and was a line foreman with GreyStone Power Company. Sonny loved hunting and fishing and was an avid NASCAR fan.

In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by a son, John Matthew Lanier, and a brother, Michael Anthony Lanier.

Sonny is survived by his wife, Betty Jo Wheeler Lanier, whom he married April 20, 1984; three children, Stacey Smith, Maria Marques, and Terry Marques; five grandchildren, Richard Smith, Ryan Smith, Cody Chasten, Lauren Marques, and Bailey Marques; two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Sunnie Smith; sister, Becky Racine. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

In keeping with his wishes, Sonny will be cremated, and a private graveside memorial service will be held.
