Radford Levan Talley

April 13, 1937 — January 17, 2026

Radford Levan Talley, age 88, passed away peacefully at home on January 17, 2026, surrounded by the love of the family and faith that guided his life. Born on April 13, 1937, in Cullman County, Alabama, he was the son of John Henry and Ludie Adeline Chambers Talley. The family later moved to Cherokee County, Alabama, where Radford grew up, laying early foundations of character, curiosity, and conviction. He graduated from Cherokee County High School and went on to serve his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Oriskany, in aviation ordinance.

After his military service, Radford married the love of his life, Shelby Jean Chandler of Selma, Alabama, beginning a devoted partnership of 66 years rooted in faith, family, and shared purpose.

Radford pursued education with passion and persistence, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Berry College, a Master’s degree and Specialist degree from the University of Georgia, and additional postgraduate work at Georgia State University. Education was not simply his profession, it was his calling. He believed deeply that the dignity of work and the development of technical skills were central to individual purpose and national strength.

His career reflected that conviction. After five years as an Industrial Arts teacher, Radford became Director of Vocational Education for the Polk County School District, where his leadership helped shape Georgia’s movement toward comprehensive high schools. Cedartown High School was among the first in the state to adopt this model, followed by Rockmart High School, the first school in Georgia to combine science, math, and technical education under one roof. His vision was practical, progressive, and profoundly student-centered. During his tenure, Radford received numerous honors, including being named Georgia’s Top Vocational Administrator. Additionally, Radford had three professional articles published in respected journals and authored one book, extending his influence well beyond the classroom.

After retirement, his service continued. As Vice President of RST Educational Solutions, he consulted for multiple initiatives, including Georgia’s Career and Technical Education programs, and worked with the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice to establish technical education opportunities in select centers breaking barriers and opening doors for students often overlooked.

Equally important to Radford was his faith. A faithful member of Rockmart FBC, he served as a deacon and lived out his beliefs through quiet leadership and consistent service. His faith was especially meaningful when shared with his daughters, serving alongside them on youth mission trips where belief became action and love was expressed through service. His current membership is Tabernacle Church, Carrollton, GA.

Outside of work and church, Radford lived life with energy and enthusiasm. He enjoyed golf, running, biking, boating, and treasured time spent with family. Some of his most cherished memories were made running the Peachtree Road Race with his nephew Randall McCord, his children, and later his grandchildren.

Known for his dry humor, quick wit, and genuine love for people, Radford made those around him feel valued and seen. Above all achievements, his greatest pride was his family. He loved his daughters deeply, delighted in his grandchildren, and found great joy in his great-grandchildren. To his daughters, he was steady and steadfast—simply put, a fabulous dad.

Radford’s life was grounded in a steady and lived faith, marked by humility, service, and love for others. His walk reflected the words of Scripture:

“He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8

Radford is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dr. Shelby Talley; his daughters and their families: Gina (Mike) Hawkins, Jennifer (Dan) Gastley, and Lisa (Sam) Stephenson; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins from his large and loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents, nine siblings, and their spouses.

In honor of Radford’s memory, memorial contributions may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research at michaeljfox.org under Donate Now.

A celebration of Radford’s life and faithful service will be held at a later date at First Baptist Church of Rockmart, with Reverend Mary Lou Grimmett officiating. Friends will be received by the family at Alvis Miller Funeral Home in Rockmart, GA, followed by a graveside service at the National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.
