Mrs. Sally Shields McWhorter, age 83, of Rome, GA, passed away Wednesday morning, May 20, 2026, at her residence.

Mrs. McWhorter was born in Rock Springs, GA, on February 12, 1943, daughter of the late John William Shields, Sr., and Obera Smith Shields. She had lived the greater part of her life in Rome and was a member of Oak Hill Church of Christ. For many years Mrs. McWhorter was a medical transcriptionist with Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital. She had a creative spirit and enjoyed drawing, painting, coloring, and quilting.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. McWhorter was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Shields Gaston, two brothers, John William Shields, Jr., and David Smith Shields. Three nephews and one great-nephew also preceded her in death.

Mrs. McWhorter is survived by her husband of over 60 years, Lamar McWhorter, whom she married September 3, 1965; one daughter, Rebecca Moore (Steve); one son, Patrick McWhorter (Sherri); five grandchildren, Molly McWhorter, Sara Moore, Wesley Moore, Dusty Moore, and Charlie Moore; one great-granddaughter, Presley; two sisters, Diann Shields Bell, and Joyce Wright; two brothers, Labron Shields, and Don Shields. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. McWhorter will be held on Friday morning, May 22, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Oak Hill Church of Christ. Don Shields and Elizabeth Shields will deliver eulogies. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. McWhorter’s family will receive friends at Oak Hill Church of Christ on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the service hour.

Mrs. McWhorter’s nephews will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice or the Oak Hill Church of Christ.
